You then, my child, be strengthened by the grace that is in Christ Jesus,
and what you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses entrust
to faithful men, who will be able to teach others also.

(2 Timothy 2:1-2 ESV)

In what most scholars believe was Paul’s final inspired writing, he instructs Timothy to implement a sustainable pattern of ministry: Paul —Timothy—Faithful Men—-Others also.

This pattern, from 2 Timothy 2:2, informs our efforts as we face our congregation’s official charter service next week.

Before listening to the sermon audio, it would help to be aware of the following video which contains a scene from the movie Walk The Line about the life of Johnny Cash.  The scene depicts a young Johnny Cash, played by Joaquin Phoenix, auditioning in a studio.   Though the sentiment about believing in oneself being more important than believing in God is not one TERC would support, the emphasis on being real and honest certainly makes a valid point.  The point of the scene in relation to the sermon is with regard to choosing one’s final words, or last song as Paul the Apostle did in writing to Timothy just before his own execution.
